FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Radford Army Ammunition Plant announces its redesigned web site for the Installation Restoration Program

RADFORD ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT, Radford, Virginia—The Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP) announces its redesigned web site, www.radfordaapirp.org, for the Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The web site was created in an effort to make program information more readily available and engage the public.

The IRP is a U.S. Army program implemented at installations to identify, investigate, and clean up contamination resulting from past operations. Through the IRP, impacts to water and soil resulting from past actions at RFAAP are being investigated. Ongoing efforts at the plant focus on gaining a clearer understanding of the issues—source areas, the natural setting (soil, geology, and groundwater characteristics), and other information that might affect cleanup decisions. The redesigned web site is intended to encourage community involvement.

The RFAAP IRP web site provides a variety of information about the ongoing environmental restoration program at RFAAP, such as the installation action plan, site maps, and photos, fact sheets, and information about RFAAP’s Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) and information repository.

The RAB was formed in 1998 as a forum for exchange of information with the community. Members include local citizens and representatives from RFAAP and regulatory agencies. RFAAP provides information to and solicits input from the RAB regarding IRP actions and goals. RAB meetings occur bi-monthly with six meetings per year. Anyone in the community interested in becoming an RAB member should contact Mr. Jim McKenna, the RFAAP Restoration Program Manager.

In September 1999, RFAAP set up an information repository, which is available for public review at the Christiansburg Branch of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library. The repository is a collection of documents relating to RFAAP’s IRP. It provides much of the same information provided on the web site as well as more in-depth technical documents about site activities.

For more information, please contact Mr. Jim McKenna, RFAAP Restoration Program Manager, at (540) 639-8641.
