Site Tour - Jim McKenna, Jerry Redder
Mr. Jim McKenna and Mr. Jerry Redder led a driving site
tour and discussed groundwater monitoring and current groundwater
studies at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP). The tour
began with a brief overview of the current operating portion
of the plant.
The RAB was taken to the Horseshoe Area and viewed several
solid waste management units and hazardous waste management
units. Groundwater monitoring at each site is determined by
regulatory requirements for the site, including frequency of
monitoring and types of analyses.
Mr. McKenna discussed the groundwater study by Shaw/IT to assess
where groundwater comes from and where it flows in the Horseshoe
Area, in addition to delineating the karst nature (sinkholes,
springs, caves) of the area. The study includes weather monitoring
and New River water level monitoring. The study results will
be compiled in a current conditions report in 2004.
Closing Remarks
The site visit was concluded at 8:05 p.m.
While not discussed during meeting, Radford AAP proposes to
change the schedule for RAB meetings from every two months to
every three months (i.e. once a quarter) due to declining attendance.
Therefore the next RAB meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September
18, 2003.
